The fear of these words is insecurity and we build up the fear and insecurity by censoring them. The reaction to that insecurity is the removal of access to ideas, expression, creativity from free thinking people in what should be a free society. I’ll never forget the time my Dad taught me about censorship. He told me if we let them take away the bad words, it opens the door for them to one day take away the good words. Radio is an important medium as it allows us access to thoughts and ideas of those who share our country. It gives us a voice and it gives the voice an audience. It’s a vital form of communication that shouldn’t be censored. If we remove the word faggot from the radio, it is not going to remove bigotry, racism, violence, hatred; it is only going to perpetuate the ignorance the word begets. We need to understand ourselves, examine ourselves, share ourselves, the good and the bad. If we hide the bad, we blind ourselves from our weakness, the things we need to be more aware of so we overcome them. That’s why Schindler’s List was made, that’s why Huckleberry Finn was written, that’s why great art is inspired by terrible tragedy. That’s why we view this art and learn from it, discuss it. It allows us to appreciate who we are as a nation and how we got here, faggots, injuns, crackers and all.
